About National Library of Viet Nam

The National Library of Viet Nam is housed in a colonial-style building on Trang Thi Street. It was originally established at the Bibliothèque Pierre Pasquier in 1917, the National Library of Viet Nam today houses over one million books and managed by a staff of 110, 80% of whom are university graduates. It is the only national deposit library where all Vietnamese publications are lodged. Also deposited to the library are Vietnamese theses and theses on Vietnam written outside the country - the collection now includes about 9000 PhD theses.

The National Library of Viet Nam also functions as a cultural resource and information centre. Its archive includes Vietnam's oldest newspaper dating to 1865, and some 4000 ancient manuscripts. National Library moved from its original French colonial headquarters on Trang Thi Street into a new US$ 6 million building located on the same site, allowing for an expansion in floor area, and enabling the creation of 10 reading rooms for over 10,000 readers. It also has new climatised storage space for over three million documents.
